DESCRIPTION

Over the last few decades, the global oil refining industry has gone through many ups and downs. Historically, oil refining has been a low margin sector, with fewer investments, particularly in upgrading the existing capacity. However, in the period from 1970s to 1990s, there has been a considerable amount of investments in the sector; though the demand remained low due to financial crisis in Asia and lower industrial growth worldwide. This resulted in surplus refining capacity worldwide during this period. In last decade, despite heavy investments in the sector, this trend has started to reverse with growing demand in emerging economies like China, India and Brazil. According to industry estimates, global oil refining capacity is around 83 million barrels per day; and to meet the growing global demand, this capacity has to reach the level of 93 million barrels per day by 2010.
